This blog post is brought to you by Blue's Clues! Who watched Blue's Clues or have kids who watched it? Remember Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper and their baby, Paprika? Brings back so many memories for me! This actually does have something to do with etiquette, however.
The salt and pepper shakers are a set and are "married". Therefore, the salt and pepper shakers should be passed together. Ask for the salt, you should also get the pepper. If someone at the table asks you to pass the pepper, the salt should be passed as well. Why should they be passed together? See below for the answer!

Answer: Passing the salt and pepper together maintains balance and symmetry to the table and also offers a convenience to the person requesting it in case they need to season their food with both!
