The bread and butter plate is often a fixture of a fine dining place setting, but it actually serves two purposes. This blog post brings you a few etiquette facts and tips about the bread and butter plate:
The bread and butter plate is always on the left side of the dinner plate.
If you hold up your hands with your fingers straight and make a circle in each hand with your index finger and thumb, you will form a “b” and a “d” with your hands. This makes it easy to remember that “b” for “bread” goes on the left and “d” for “drink” goes on the right!
While the bread and butter plate is obviously used for your bread and butter, it is also your “trash can” plate because the plate can hold most anything extracted from the mouth (e.g., an olive pit, fish bone…).
The bread and butter plate usually has its own knife. You should butter your bread one bite at a time and between buttering, place it across the top of the plate.
Hope these were helpful little facts for your next dining experience!
Cheers!
